Poverty and Corruption

Being poor does not only mean falling below a certain income line. Poverty is a multi-dimensional phenomenon characterized by lack of access to essential services such as health, education, sanitation, basic civil rights, empowerment and human development.

Across different country contexts, corruption has been a cause and consequence of poverty.

Corruption denies the participation of citizens and diverts public resources into private hands. The poor find themselves at the losing end of this corruption chain - without state support and the services they demand.

As the World Bank has aptly warned, corruption is the greatest obstacle to reducing poverty.

The poor tend to suffer a double level of exclusion in countries where corruption characterises the rules of the game. In a corrupt environment, wealth is captured, income inequality is increased and a state's governing capacity is reduced, particularly when it comes to attending to the needs of the poor.

For citizens, these outcomes create a scenario that leaves the poor trapped and development stalled, often forcing the poor to rely on bribes and other illegal payments in order to access basic services. For a country, the results produce multiple and destructive forces: increased corruption, reduced sustainable growth and slower rates of poverty reduction.

GLOW - Corruption Free

Partners with GLOW and the GLOW Club is a corruption free organization. By eliminating multiple layers of people through which funds often get misappropriated, maintaining complete transparency, and empowering those most in need, we ensure that 100% of all money is spent solely for its intended purpose; to pay for the school fees of members of the GLOW Club.

GLOW is organized with the following anti-corruption recommendations in mind:

Structure of GLOW

GLOW Club Zambia is facilitated locally in Mushota, Zambia by Alyssa Mooney (Peace Corps Volunteer), and Ba Chomba, a trusted village female role model and volunteer GLOW Club mentor. They have set up a transparent system in which the intended benefactors of income generating activites, the AIDS orphaned members of the GLOW Club, have complete access to all financial records. This creates a level accountability and control held by the collective group.

Partners with GLOW is a non-profit organization set up solely to facilitate online sales of handcrafts made by GLOW Club members to pay for school fees, as well as to raise global awareness of the GLOW Club Zambia. All fees associated with maintaining the website are payed for with the private funds of Partners with GLOW founders, Adria Mooney and James DiPadua. Partners with GLOW has also worked with the GLOW Club to micro-finance start up costs such as a sewing machine, a bead loom, and fabric. The GLOW Club members purchase further supplies by collective decision using money earned from sales. The ultimate focus of the GLOW Club is education, not income generation, so new supplies are only purchased when necessary. All money donated through glowzambia.org is channelled directly to the group bank account of GLOW Club Zambia.

The simple grassroots structure of Partners with GLOW/GLOW Club Zambia enables members of the GLOW Club to truly lift themselves out of poverty through education, empowerment, and economic activity.

GLOW Club Zambia eliminates corruption and maximizes benefit to GLOW Club members by placing them in positions of power and control.
